Agatha Christie: Unfinished Portrait exhibition at Torre Abbey Historic House
An exhibition of photographs, Agatha Christie: Unfinished Portrait: A Life in Photographs, offering a new insight into the life of world famous author will be at Torre Abbey Historic House between Saturday 12 September until Sunday 18 October.
Featuring never-before-seen photographs from the author’s private collection, the exhibition illustrates the life behind the works of the most widely published author of all time. Torre Abbey is the first venue outside of London to host this exhibition, complemented by a display of original letters and personal anecdotes from global fans collated as part of the #125Stories project.
Each image is accompanied by a quote in Christie’s own words, drawn from both published works and unpublished personal correspondence, beautifully capturing her thoughts and feelings from early childhood, through both marriages and her international adventures, to her years as a world famous author.
A timeline will sit alongside the pictures and mark the key milestones in Christie’s life, including the first performance of the world’s longest running play, The Mousetrap, and the publication of definitive works such as Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None.
The jewel in the crown of the exhibition will be a portrait of Agatha Christie by expressionist painter Oscar Kokoschka, painted in 1969 for Dame Agatha’s 80th birthday.

Torbay’s Velopark in Clennon Valley, Paignton, has just celebrated its one year anniversary.
The £800,000 facility was funded by both British Cycling and Torbay Council and has attracted over 11,000 community users in its first year.
The 1.5km closed road circuit offers professional coaching sessions provided by British Cycling qualified instructors. However, you don’t have to be an expert cyclist to enjoy the facility as it’s a good place to learn to ride or develop cycling skills for all the family and all ages. Learn to ride sessions and bikeability sessions are available at the Velopark too. There are also opportunities for multi-sport use and a roller skating club currently hires the circuit on Thursday evenings.
Torbay Council’s Executive Lead for Community Services, Councillor Robert Excell, said: “The Velopark has proved to be a fantastic success over the past twelve months and an invaluable addition to Torbay’s sporting infrastructure. Open daily, the Velopark provides people of all riding abilities with a safe place to ride, have fun and keep fit together.”
Regional Development Manager for British Cycling, Will Newton, commented: "We’re very pleased with the cycling opportunities that our investment in Torbay Velopark has provided over the facility's first year of operation, for coaching and racing as well as recreational cycling participation.
“More people than ever before are riding their bikes in the UK and it is fantastic that the facility has performed so well in its first year. British Cycling looks forward to an increase in this activity as the circuit becomes more widely known both to Torbay residents and those further afield.”
The Velopark offers a variety of bikes to hire from £4, trikes and recumbent bikes are also offered. Prices to ride start at £1.50 per hour and there are several memberships available to regular users of the Park. Come and bring a picnic and have fun!

Dear TTA Members
BUSINESS ADVICE SURGERY #1 – THE FUTURE FOR BUSINESS RATES IN TORBAY - LET US LOBBY ON YOUR BEHALF
High business rates - is this the reason why we have so many empty shops and how can we address this.
Empty shops and high business rates benefit no-one. It has a negative impact on retail and tourism, which in turn has a negative impact on money spend. This limits the amount locals spend on products and services so it affects every business type
Where does the money that is collected go?
WHAT IS YOUR CONCERN, WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IT.
Lets give ourselves a big pat on the back as Torquay is named the top Seaside Destination for 2015 ..
Congratulations are in order. An update from us on Solitaire Du Figaro..
Solitaire du Figaro competitors descend on Torbay ahead of the race in June
Setting off from Lorient, France on Tuesday 10th March, eight British and eight French Solitaire du Figaro competitors will sail 300 miles across channel, around Fastnet Rock and into Torbay. The training exercise is not only a dress rehearsal for the final stages of the 2185 mile solo race, it is also a chance for the skippers to get to know the area and the locals ahead of the arrival of the race on the 18th June 2015. Torbay is the only UK stopover on the Solitaire du Figaro course in 2015, bringing a professional sailing race to the pontoons and a bustling race village and festival atmosphere shore side – the race village will be open on Beacon Quay between the 17th and 21st June.
Sailing into Torbay on Thursday 12th March, the dress rehearsal begins for both the skippers and the town. The 16 Figaros will dock in Torquay Harbour, skippers then donning their race flags before heading to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club for some well-deserved hot food and a beer. On finishing a race leg, Solitaire du Figaro host venues traditionally lay on a “Miam”. The direct translation of “Miam” from French to English is Yum, and this post race refueling is just that! After days of little sleep, freeze dried food and solitary sailing, the skippers rush from the boats to Miam, to be laid on by the RYTC in June, where they fill themselves up on hearty food (steak and chips is a favourite) and conversation. Ready for action whatever the time of day, the Miam is one of the most important elements of the stopover for the skippers. This is where they sit, relax, refuel and regale the tales to anyone who will listen. This week, the RYTC will practice the Miam for the visiting sailors in Torbay.
On Friday 13th March, the eight British Solitaire skippers, including south west sailors Sam Matson, Robin Elsey and Henry Bomby, will meet the locals (penguins) at Living Coasts. There will also be a christening ceremony on the pontoons for newly sponsored Figaros of Sam and Henry. The sailors have chosen to launch their 2015 campaigns on the pontoons in Torquay where they will be returning with the Solitaire du Figaro in June.

Greenway House, the much loved holiday home of the late Dame Agatha Christie, reopens it doors to the public on Saturday 7th March.
Greenway, unlike some National Trust Houses, never really sleeps she just snoozes gracefully amongst its beautiful setting on the banks of the River Dart. To visit at this time of year a joy to behold with the gardens springing in to life with a riot of colour against the cool cream tones of the house walls.
Visiting Greenway is easy and in our opinion half of the fun, with choices ranging from a 1940’ Bus or Boat with Greenway Ferry or Steam Train with the Dartmouth Rail & Riverboat Company.
If taking the car, make sure you book your parking spaces in advance by calling 01803 842382 or of cause you can book online.
